Playing through: Thank You South Carolinians!

2021년 6월 25일 콜럼비아 사우스 캐롤라이나 WJB Dorn VA Medical Center에 비치한 한국전쟁 추모비 앞에서 엄숙한 추모식이 거행 되었다. 추모식에는 임 춘우(전 콜럼비아 한인회장, 추모비 기증인)이외 20 여명이 참석 했었으며 병원 측에서는 Dr. Omura (VJB Dorn VA Medical Center Director)가 참석 하여 임 춘우 회장님 이외 참석자들을 환영했다. 당일 행사는 Covid 19으로 인한 인원제한과 사회적 거리 간격과 마스크 착용등 방역 지침을 지켜서 진행 되었다.

이 추모비는 임 춘우 회장님이 2001년 (당시 한인회장) 대한민국 낙동강 지역의 돌로 제작된것으로 사우스 캐롤라이나 주민과 한국전에 참전했던 자랑스러운 용사들, 특히 그들의 가족을 위해서 기증된것이다.

1950년 6월 25일은 북한 괴뢰군의 남침으로 대한민국 역사의 한페이지가 피로 물 들여진 비극이 시작 된 날이었다. 그러나 이날의 비극은 대한민국 국민에게만 한정된것이 아니었다. 한국전에 참여 했던 UN군과 그들의 가족에게도 비극의 역사가 시작된 것이다.

미 국방부 자료에 의하면 사우스 캐롤라이나 주에서 6.25 한국전쟁 참전용사중 PFC. Adams Ambros R., CPL. Adkins Colies J. Jr. 이외 481명이 전사한것으로 기록 되어있다.. 그중 CPL. Adkinson Harold F.이외 98명은 영영 고향에 돌아 오지 못하고 그들의 유해는 아직도 대한민국 어느곳에 묻혀 있을것으로 짐작된다. 어느 병사는 갓 18세를 넘긴 앞이 창창한 젊은 목숨을 지구 반대편 작은 나라에서 목숨을 바친것이다.

아마도 이 젊은 병사들의 부모들은 아들이 한국으로 발령을 받기 이전에는 코리아 라는 나라가 지도상 어디에 에 있는지 아는 사람은 그리 많지 않았을 것이다. 전쟁터로 아들을 보냈던 부모들의 고통스러웠던 마음을 누가 감히 짐작 할수있을까? 게다가 아들의 전사 통보를 받았던 부모들의 고통은 어떤 방법으로도 보상이 되지 않는다.

그런 의미에서 우리는 일년에 한번이라도 이곳을 찾아 그들의 영혼을 달래 줄수 있다는 것은 정말

다행이다. 그리고 그렇게 할수있도록 추모비를 기증한 임 춘우 회장님에게 감사를 드리며 추모비가 빛을 볼수있도록 환경을 제공해준 WJB Dorn VA Medical Center에도 감사한 마음을 전한다.

개인의 일상은 가족의 역사를 만들고 좀더 나아가서는 지역사회의 역사를 만든다. 콜럼비아 지역 한인들의 삶 역시 이 지역사회의 역사에 포함되어있다. 임 춘우 회장님의 공로는 한인사회를 넘어 사우스 캐롤라이나 역사의 한페이지에 기록 되어야 한다.

A solemn memorial service was held on June 25th, 2021 in front of the Korean War Memorial Monument at the WJB Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina. About 20 people attended the memorial service, including Mr. Roy C.W. Lim (the monument donor). On the VA Hospital side, Dr. David L. Omura (Medical Center Director) attended and welcomed the attendees.

Due to Covid 19, the day’s event was held in compliance with quarantine guidelines such as limiting the number of people, social distancing, and wearing of masks.

This monument was donated by Mr. Roy C.W. Lim in 2001 (then President of the Korean Association of Columbia. The monument was made in Nakdong River region of Korea and was donated to the people of South Carolina and proud veterans who served in the Korean War, and especially their families.

June 25, 1950 was the day the tragedy began when a page in the history of South Korea was stained with blood due to the invasion of the South by a North Korean puppet. However, tragedy of this day was not limited to the Korean people. The tragic history also began for UN forces who participated in the Korean War and their families who suffered along side them.

According to the US Department of Defense data, Korean War veterans from South Carolina, PFC Adams, Ambros R., Cpl. Adkins Colis J. Jr. and 481 soldiers were killed. Among them, CPL. Adkins, Harold F., plus 98 soldiers never made it back to their home. And their remains are presumed to be buried somewhere in Korea. Some of these soldiers who gave their lives in a country on the other side of the world had just turned 18 with a bright future ahead of them.

Perhaps the parents of these young soldiers did not know where Korea was on the map before their son was sent to Korea. Who would dare to guess the painful heart of the parents who sent their sons to the battlefield? Moreover, the suffering of the parents who received the notification of their son’s death can not compensated in any way.

In that sense, it is a blessing for us that we can visit this monument at least once a year to comfort their souls.

And I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Lim, who donated the monument to make this possible, and I also would like to express my gratitude to WJB Dorn VA Medical Center for providing a beautiful environment for this monument to see the light of day.

The collection of individual’s daily life makes the history of the family, and furthermore, the history of the community. The every day lives of Koreans in Columbia area also included in the history of this community. Mr. Lim’s contribution to the community should go beyond the Korean community and be recorded on a page of South Carolina’s history.
