KLGA Christmas Party December 12, 2012

Lovely Ladies

A day too cold for golf is a great day for festivities.  This group of ladies played golf together seriously all year around and ended with a great party!

This year KLGA Christmas party was held at the lovely “Shumard Castle” over looking Still House Lake, hosted by Laurie Shumard and co-hosted by Wanda, Kay, Sonja and myself.

Laurie, Kay and Sonja are the incoming officers for 2013 and this was their way of saying “thank you” to all the members and the outgoing officers.

I truly missed those who couldn’t come.

This year the host and the committee members donated goodies and made a “gift basket” for everyone to take home.  The baskets were filled with Wanda’s Truffle, Laurie’s Cookies, Sonja’s Texas Trash, and Kay’s Fudge and tied up with bling-bling ball markers and bundles of LOVE.  Thanks to Laurie for giving up some of her food allowance.  And thanks to August (sales caddie at Golfsmith) for giving us a good deal on ball markers.

Once again, Thanks to our lovely and talented committee members, it was fabulous!!! .  Move over Martha Stewart, we have seriously creative and fabulous party planners.

Wanda came up with the craziest and the funniest game.  I laughed enough for next 12 months.

Laurie, I know you work hard to make sure everything to be perfect.  Let me tell you, you have put a big exclamation mark on 2012 KLGA Christmas party.

But, the real jewel of the party is the friendship we share with each other, that includes ladies who were unable to be at the party.

It is my privilege to be friends with these fabulous ladies. That feeling is a greater wealth than any thing I possess.

I am looking forward to make many more fun memories with these ladies.

I wish all of you and your family a Happy New Year!
Let’s play more golf in 2013!

Pat, We love you!

We honored Pat Bonner with a Lifetime Membership.  Pat Bonner was the KLGA treasure for many years and she is retiring from golf and KLGA duty.  I appreciate her for her long years of volunteer service and being a mentor to many new golfers.  I am one of those who were blessed to have her as a mentor.

A Member's Perspective

A Member’s Perspective
By Yong Wells

The first time I played golf with Killeen Ladies Golf Association (KLGA) was about five years ago.  It was a very memorable day, but in the negative sense.  On the first hole, (par five, currently #17), I shot eleven and I even made the hole in… That is, the hole in the tree.  My scorecard for that day was more like a toddler’s scribble.  All I could think was,  “These ladies are not going to welcome me back.”

The very first time I took group golf lessons was about 20years ago, but I quit as soon as the lesson was over.  I took 15years long break before I picked up the clubs for a second time.  This time I took private lessons from Stonetree’s PGA Pro and I was ready to take on the challenge of this game.  However, I felt I needed something more than just lessons, I needed the KLGA.

There are many benefits to joining organized group activities.  There are some things only a pro can teach you, but as a golfer one need to know the rules, appropriate manners, etiquette, scorekeeping, handicaps, and everyday golf.  I learned these from the KLGA sisters.  The KLGA members care for each other’s wellbeing on and off the course.  Occasionally we exchange life wisdoms and always have lots of FUN.  We are like sorority sisters with golf clubs.

The city of Killeen is known for it’s well blended cultural society and it shows on the golf course.  There you can find Asians, Europeans, Westerners, Easterners, anybody else, they all have the same thing on their mind while on the golf course.  They all want to be better golfers.

Since that dreadful day that I shot eleven on a par five, I was not only welcomed back on Ladies Play Day, but I became brave enough to participated in many sisterly tournaments in the Heart of Texas Ladies group and The Central Texas Ladies group.  I can even say that on occasion I have won a few prizes.
